The Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil
Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre
established in 1996, received approval of
the Medical Council of India (MCI), for the award
of MBBS degree from its very first batch. The
college has been accorded the status of University
(under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, vide Notification
No. F. 9-39/2001-U.3 dated 11th Jan. 2003 of the
Government of India) within a period of just six
and a half years of establishment, perhaps the
shortest period for such recognition.
This is the first private college
in the state of Maharashtra to receive MCI approval
to increase the intake capacity from 100 to 150
students in 2003, again perhaps within the shortest
span of time of seven years of establishment.
In 2003, the college was permitted
to teach post-graduate courses in a couple of
subjects. By June 2005, the college was allowed
the intake of 81 students in post graduate degree
and diploma courses in the following 19 subjects
: general surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology,
orthopaedics, opthalmology, ENT (oto rhino laryngology),
general medicine, paediatrics, anaesthesiology,
psychiatry, radio-diagnosis, TB & chest diseases,
skin & venereal diseases, pathology, community
medicine, pharmacology, microbiology, anatomy,
physiology and biochemistry. The college has been
recently permitted to conduct superspeciality
course in Neuro-surgery.
These recognitions and expansions
granted by the MCI, UGC, MHRD and by the Ministry
of Health & Family Welfare, Government of
India are the result of visionary guidance and
whole hearted support of our Vice Chancellor,
the efforts put in by the faculty and the excellent
facilities like spacious building, measuring 4,50,000
sq. ft., large lecture halls, well-equipped laboratories,
well-stocked library, a hospital with 900 beds,
ultra-modern super speciality facilities, such
as MRI, whole body CT Scan, ICUs, with ventilators,
and the equipment required for neuro-surgery,
plasitc surgery, etc.
Besides regular lectures and
practicals, the college gives importance to research.
Several research proposals of post-graduate students
and of the faculty members are approved and funded
by bodies, such as, Indian Council of Medical
Research, the Dr. D.Y. Patil University, etc.
