The Department of Psychiatry was established in Dec. 1997, with the aim of fulfilling the missions of Pad. Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, to provide quality medical education, to provide service to the large population of people suffering from mental & behavioral disorders & also to participate in active research in the field of Psychiatry.

Since then the Department has made steady progress, when in the year 2000, the Department was recognized by College of Physicians & Surgeons, Mumbai for Postgraduate Diploma course in Psychiatry & got the recognition of Medical Council of India for Post Graduate Degree & Diploma Courses in 2004. The Department also runs other Value Added Courses like " Clinical Orientation and Counseling Psychiatry". In June 2006 the Department has been recognized for Ph.D. in Psychiatry.

The Department now has a 30-bedded well-run psychiatric center with qualified faculty members, undergraduate & post graduate students and provides high standard of medical care to the needy patients in & around the area.

  Note: The first batch of P.G.student has successfully completed the 2 years Post Graduate Diploma Course and passed out in May 2007.  
     
Services  
Indoor -  
  Total No. Of Beds - 30 (15 - Male, 15 - Female)  
 
     Separate wards for male and female patients.
  Occupancy approximately 80%
  Indoor facilities are fully equipped for management of Psychiatric Emergencies.
  Indoor management is provided with following facilities-
   

- Pharmacological management
- Other Biological managements-
  Electro convulsive therapy
  Biofeedback techniques
  Narcoanalysis
- Psychotherapeutic Interventions.
- Psychological Testing.
- Trained Nursing Staff.
- Electroencephalogram (E.E.G.).
- Interventions with the help of Psychiatric Social Worker.

 
     
 

ECT under G.A. is conducted in Operation Theater; latest Brief Pulse ECT machine along with ECG & EEG monitor is used.

OPD services:  
 

In addition to General Psychiatric OPD the following specialized OPDs are run by the Department -

 
  1. Child Guidance Clinic:  
  Every Monday Time: 9 am to 12 noon.  
Activities -  
 
     Screening of child for Psychiatric illness.
  Counseling of parents.
  I.Q. testing.
  Treatment of child- Pharmacological as well as Psychotherapeutic approach.
  Memory Clinics.
  Correspondence with Schools.
  Guidance related to School placement for Mentally Retarded children.
 
     
  2. Geriatric Clinic:  
  Every Friday Time: 2 pm to 4 pm.  
  Activities-  
 
     Treatment of Elderly suffering from Psychiatric illness.
  Screening for memory impairment.
  Counseling and Psychotherapy.
  Group Therapy.
  Psychosocial Intervention.
 
     
  3. De-addiction Clinic:  
  Every Thursday Time: 2 pm to 4 pm.  
  Activities-  
 
     Psychosocial Intervention.
  Counseling.
  Education of relatives.
  Relapse prevention.
  Group Therapies.
  Detoxification
